The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the Nationwide memorandum “COVID-19: Child Nutrition Response #56” allowing for the continuation of the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) as late as December 31, 2020 or as long as funding is available. USDA extended the flexibility to support schools that have reopened or are reopening with a non-traditional learning model such as full-remote/virtual learning, or a hybrid of in-person and remote/virtual learning. This extension was granted to maintain access to nutritious meals while minimizing the potential for contracting and spreading COVID-19. The waiver flexibility allows for the safe provision of meals by eliminating the need to collect meal payments and facilitates the meal distribution process, which reduces contact between program operators and participants. 

What this means for families and students of Leicester Public Schools:

  • All students will receive Free Breakfast and Lunch, regardless if they are learning in person or accessing meals through the remote meal pick up on Wednesdays.

  • We will still be asking those students learning in-person to use their ID cards to access their meal account. This allows us to scan and record meals, and keep up with student allergies. Grade PK-4 students will order meals in the morning with their teacher and Grades 5-12 will access the meals through our meal lines, and breakfast will be available as grab and go for all students, at all schools.

  • During in-person days, if your student has had breakfast at home, the items for that particular day can be saved for a snack at home or for the next morning’s breakfast.


  • For families wishing to pick up remote meals on Wednesdays please watch for our weekly email allowing you to sign up and select your desired pick up time. Due to ordering timelines for vendors, we ask for all sign-ups to be completed by Thursday at 4:00 p.m.

We are encouraging families to continue to apply for free/reduced priced meals as this continuation expires on December 31, 2020, at which time students will be charged according to how your family/student qualifies. Full price Breakfast is $1.50 and Lunch $3.00; Reduced price Breakfast is $0.30 and Lunch $0.40.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT P-EBT CARDS- All Massachusetts families with school aged children who qualify for free or reduced price school meals under the National School Lunch Program are eligible for P-EBT benefits. Households will receive $5.70 per eligible student per day ($28.50/week) for period when school has been closed. Families receiving DTA benefits will see these funds added to existing EBT card, while those families not actively receiving DTA benefits will receive a P-EBT card in the mail, for each eligible student in the household. The PIN for each card is the identified student’s year of birth. Once you get the card, do not throw it away, as additional funds will be added through the school year, and may continue for extended period. P-EBT benefits can be used at any store that accepts SNAP, and most retailers have signs stating they accept SNAP or EBT. Benefits will carry over from month to month, and will be available for a year.

School Lunch Prepayment System

Leicester Food Services uses for a lunch prepayment system. Your login and password remain the same and your information was automatically transferred. For the notification of low balances through email you will have to log into the myschoolbucks website and set this information yourself.
